Stuart Spector Design SSD NS-94 4-String Electric Bass
Used Stuart Spector Design - SSD NS-94, 4-String Electric Bass in Translucent Black Finish with neck through body and active electronics. It is the original Ned Steinberger curved design.
I bought this bass in the mid nineties to record an album. It never left my studio. Unfortunately, when I needed to record another album a few months ago, I discovered that the on board electronics had just died. As I was in a hurry and couldn’t wait for the new part to arrive, I bought a new Warwick bass.
Now I have received and installed the new board and the bass sounds better than ever, but it has a very different sound to the Warwick, and unless I redo all the recording and for the sake of continuity, I have to stick with my new bass.
Which means that I need to sell the Spector.
The bass itself is great and more solid than anything I have owned. It is a bit heavy though (about 4 Kg).
One thing I always disliked about this bass are the position of the two pickups. They are too far apart for resting my thumb comfortably on either of them, and even though it is great for the wide spectrum of sound, it’s not good for my thumb. So I have put a thumb rest in between the pickups (see photos). If you don’t like it, just remove it, but you’ll be left with 2 tiny holes on the body. The thumb rest is made of Tassie oak and feels great.
Spector basses can be very expensive and I paid around $1500.00 for it in 1996.
I don’t have a case for it as I never used it on stage.
Call me if you have any questions or if you want to try it. I live in South Launceston.
